musings from solitude
Miniature suite for solo piano | Composed 2021 | Written for Paul Rosenberger
Musings from Solitude is a piece about being lost in thought. Each movement's material was based off of one of the 6 inventions Alban Berg employed in the final act of his opera, Wozzeck.
I. on Nostalgia...(invention on a key)
With a gentle sadness, one remembers what they wish they never took for granted
II. on Manic Thoughts...(invention on a hexachord)
Hours can be lost worrying over trivial matters, so it is best to not get stuck in a draining loop
III. on Reflection...(invention on theme)
One's past always sits in dialogue with the present; make peace with who you were
IV. on Hurt...(invention on a rhythm)
Nothing stings more than the betrayal of a friend who was trusted at the darkest hour
V. on Rage...(invention on continuous eighth-note movement)
Twisting, crawling, itching; rage consumes all corners of thought
VI. on Loneliness...(invention on a note)
Through loneliness one has a chance to meet who they really are
The performer has the option to read the text aloud before they play each miniature, though it is not required.
